Classifieds & Marketplace Rules ("The List-It Code")
List-It classifieds are a secondhand, local noticeboard — sell it, swap it, give it away. These rules keep it safe, legal and Kiwi. Breaking them means your listing is removed and repeat offenders are blocked. They form part of our Terms of Service.
Last updated: [effective date]. Report a listing anytime via the Report button or info@list-it.nz.
The basics
- Area-first: you list and browse within a town/area. List in the area the item is actually in.
- Secondhand only: used goods, swaps, trades and giveaways. No brand-new retail/dropshipping/commercial stock posing as classifieds.
- One real photo + a phone/text contact are required. AI helps write the title and description from your photo; you can edit it.
- No links, no emails in listings or messages. Contact is phone/text or on-site messaging — this keeps scammers out.
- Listings expire after 30 days. You can repost.
- Every listing is auto-checked before it goes live, and may be reviewed by a moderator.
Prohibited — never list these
Illegal items or anything whose sale is restricted by law, including: weapons and firearms, ammunition, knives/offensive weapons; drugs, controlled substances, vaping/tobacco and alcohol (sale of these requires licences we don't support); prescription medicines; stolen goods or anything you don't own/can't legally sell; counterfeit, replica or pirated goods; objectionable, violent or sexual material; sexual services; live animals (rehoming of pets may be permitted in a dedicated category only if we enable it, never for profit/breeding-scale); human remains, body parts or fluids; hazardous materials; recalled or unsafe products; government IDs, passports, or items that enable fraud; tickets sold above face value where prohibited; financial/crypto schemes, loans, or "get rich" offers; anything that breaches someone's privacy or intellectual property.
Restricted — only if specifically allowed
Some categories have extra rules or may be switched off at launch (e.g. cars/trailers must have honest WOF/rego details; baby items must meet safety standards; electricals must be safe and not recalled). If a category isn't available in your area, it isn't enabled yet.
Seller responsibilities
- Describe items honestly — condition, faults, and what's included. Misleading descriptions breach the Fair Trading Act 1986.
- Use your own photos of the actual item.
- Set a fair, honest price (or mark Free / Swap / Offers).
- You're responsible for your own tax obligations if you trade regularly.
Buyer & meet-up safety
- Deal locally and in person where possible; meet in a public place; inspect before you pay.
- Be wary of anyone who won't meet, pushes couriers/overpayment, or asks you to move off-platform — these are classic scams. Report them.
- List-It is a noticeboard only; we're not party to the sale and don't handle payment or delivery.
Moderation & enforcement
We use automated checks (including AI moderation) plus human review and user reports. We may edit, hold, or remove listings and messages, and suspend or block accounts and IP addresses, at our discretion, to keep the platform safe — without notice where necessary. Scam, abuse and prohibited-item reports are prioritised.
