Wyndham is a quiet eastern Southland town on the Mataura River, about 45 kilometres east of Invercargill and south of Gore, in country famous for its brown-trout fly fishing. Its original Māori name was Mokoreta; the present name came from stations named in the 1850s and, through the adjoining river, indirectly honours a Crimean War general, which is why so many of its streets carry Crimean names. Laid out in 1869 and once home to dairy and flax-milling works, it now serves the surrounding farms of the Mataura plains.
