It grew around the White Horse Hotel, built in mud brick in 1864 by John Nixon Beck as a Cobb and Co coaching stop, and the township took the publican's name after first being called White Horse. The original hotel was saved by a local historical society in 1990 and still stands across the road from its 1925 successor, a small monument to the coaching age on the Maniototo run.
