Milton is a South Otago town on the Tokomairaro River, founded as a milling settlement in the 1850s and once known as Mill Town. Its streets are named after British poets, and the flour and oat mill that gave the town its name later became the Bruce Woollen Mill, the principal employer until it closed in 1999. Sitting on State Highway 1 about 50 kilometres south of Dunedin, it grew as an important stop on the route to the Otago goldfields.
