Mount Wellington takes its name from Maungarei, the youngest volcano on the Auckland mainland, which erupted around 10,000 years ago. Māori cultivated kūmara on the maunga's fertile terraces from about the 14th century, and the area grew much of Auckland's vegetables until its market gardens gave way to industry in the 1940s. The suburb is now a mix of homes and businesses anchored by Sylvia Park, one of the country's largest shopping centres, which opened in 2006.
