Papakura sits on the shore of the Pahurehure Inlet at the southern edge of greater Auckland, a Tamaki Maori settlement with a pa on Pukekiwiriki long before the first European residents arrived in 1846. It grew along the Great South Road and the southern railway, where it is now one of the busiest stations on Auckland's network, and held city status from 1975 until the 1989 reforms. The town centre, with the historic Hawkins Theatre, anchors one of Auckland's fastest-growing districts and the gateway to the rural south and the Karaka thoroughbred country.
