Manurewa is a large, proudly multicultural suburb of South Auckland with deep significance for Ngati Te Ata Waiohua, settled since at least the 13th century and grown into a rural village after its railway station opened in 1875. It became a shopping hub when Southmall opened in 1967 and is home to the Auckland Botanic Gardens, which draw more than a million visitors a year, and the Basque-styled 1924 Nathan Homestead.
