The unfinished record: 76% of NZ businesses have no phone number or website on file
Every registered business in New Zealand has a public record. Almost none of them are finished.
We ran the counts across all 753,076 businesses on the New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) register in September 2026. The headline is worse than the website gap we reported in July, because it is not about websites at all.
573,281 businesses, 76.1% of the register, have neither a phone number nor a website on file. Not a bad one. Not an old one. Nothing.
You are free to cite these figures. The method sits at the bottom.
The numbers
| What is on the record | Businesses | Share of the register |
|---|---|---|
| A town or city | 694,173 | 92.2% |
| A category (what they actually do) | 447,472 | 59.4% |
| A phone number | 139,824 | 18.6% |
| A website | 121,176 | 16.1% |
| A logo | 83,796 | 11.1% |
| Phone and website together | 81,205 | 10.8% |
| Phone, website and category together | 70,005 | 9.3% |
Read the last row again. Nine out of every hundred registered New Zealand businesses have all three of the things a customer needs in order to choose them: what they do, how to reach them, and where to find out more.
Why this is a different problem from "not having a website"
In July we wrote that 83.9% of NZ businesses have no website on record, and the natural reading was that a lot of small operators simply have not built one. Fair enough. Plenty of good businesses run on word of mouth and a phone.
Except 81.4% do not have the phone number on the record either.
That is the part that should bother people. A business with no website but a phone number on file is findable. A business with neither is a legal entity and a name, and nothing a customer or a machine can act on. The register knows the company exists. It does not know how to reach it, and increasingly, neither does anything else.
What this means now that search answers questions instead of listing links
When someone typed keywords into Google, a thin record still had a chance. The engine matched words on a page and the searcher did the rest of the work, clicking through, hunting for a phone number, checking the hours.
Answer engines do not work that way. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews return a recommendation, and a recommendation needs facts the engine can stand behind. Name, what you do, where you are, when you are open, how to contact you. If those facts are missing or disagree across the web, the engine does the safe thing and names somebody else. It is not punishing you. It has nothing to say about you.
That is the real cost of an unfinished record. Not a lower ranking. Absence from the answer.
The good news, and it is genuinely good
None of this is a hard problem. It is an unglamorous one.
Every one of those 753,076 businesses already has a page on List-It, built from the official register. The legal name is right, the NZBN is right, the town is usually right. What is missing is the part only the owner has: the phone number people should actually ring, the services in the words customers use, the opening hours, a few photos of real work.
That is a five minute job, it is free, and it moves you from the 76% to the 9%.

Method
Counts were taken on 1 September 2026 against List-It's copy of the full NZBN register, which is reloaded monthly under our data agreement with the New Zealand Companies Office.
The denominator is all 753,076 businesses on the register at that date, including entities that are dormant, holding companies, or otherwise not trading publicly. That inflates the "missing" percentages relative to the population of actively trading businesses, and we have not tried to filter it, because any filter would be a guess. Treat these as figures for the register, not for the trading economy.
"Phone number" and "website" mean a value recorded against the business in our register copy, from the NZBN record or from a verified owner. A business may well have a phone number that has never been recorded anywhere public, which is precisely the point of the article: if it is not on the record, it is not available to a customer or a machine that goes looking.
Category is our own classification, derived from the register's industry codes and refined over time, so the 40.6% with no category reflects both gaps in the source data and businesses we have not confidently classified yet.
