Henderson is the commercial and transport centre of West Auckland, which began as Thomas Henderson's kauri sawmill on the Opanuku Stream in the 1840s and grew once the North Auckland railway reached it in the 1880s. Lebanese immigrant Assid Corban planted a vineyard here in 1902, and the Corban Estate is now an arts centre at the heart of a suburb that was the seat of Waitakere City until the 2010 Auckland amalgamation. It remains the gateway to the Waitakere Ranges and the west coast beaches, a busy, multicultural hub around Henderson station and the WestCity mall.
