Massey is a large suburb in the north-west of Auckland, named in 1915 after Prime Minister William Massey and once known as Lawsonville. In the gum-digging days around 1900 the area was home to the camp of Don Buck, a Portuguese immigrant remembered today in a road, a reserve and a school. The suburb spread as a commuter area after the North-Western Motorway, and the nearby Westgate centre now serves the growing north-west.
