New Lynn sits on the Whau River in West Auckland, at one of the narrowest points of the North Island where Maori once portaged waka between the Waitemata and Manukau harbours. Rich local clay made it a brick and pottery town from the 1850s, and from the 1940s the Crown Lynn potteries grew into one of the largest ceramics works in the southern hemisphere, drawing a wave of Pasifika workers to the area. Its rail line was sunk into a trench in 2010 to create a modern transport hub, and the town centre has since redeveloped into a denser commercial and residential heart for the west.
