Rich local clay made it a brick and pottery town from the 1850s, and from the 1940s the Crown Lynn potteries grew into one of the largest ceramics works in the southern hemisphere, drawing a wave of Pasifika workers to the area. Its rail line was sunk into a trench in 2010 to create a modern transport hub, and the town centre has since redeveloped into a denser commercial and residential heart for the west.
