Onehunga grew up around Auckland's port on the Manukau Harbour, established in 1847 as one of the country's first Fencible settlements and soon one of New Zealand's busiest harbours, shipping timber and carrying passengers south to the Waikato and beyond. The port faded after 1900 as silting and rival harbours took the trade, leaving a legacy of heritage Victorian and Edwardian buildings along Onehunga Mall. Today the high street, the Sunday markets and the Dress-Smart outlet centre make this historic suburb beneath Maungakiekie a lively shopping and residential village.
