The port faded after 1900 as silting and rival harbours took the trade, leaving a legacy of heritage Victorian and Edwardian buildings along Onehunga Mall. Today the high street, the Sunday markets and the Dress-Smart outlet centre make this historic suburb beneath Maungakiekie a lively shopping and residential village.
