Its sportsgrounds at Lloyd Elsmore Park, opened in 1981 and named for a long-serving Manukau mayor, host cricket, rugby, hockey and netball, and the adjoining Howick Historical Village preserves the area's colonial past. Bounded by the Tamaki River estuary, it is a settled, family-oriented suburb at the centre of east Auckland's retail and recreation.
