Ponsonby is an inner-city Auckland suburb strung along a ridge two kilometres west of the CBD, first subdivided in 1845 and filled mostly with the Victorian and Edwardian villas and workers' cottages that still define its streets. Rented cheaply by Maori and Pacific families in the 1950s and 1960s, it was a working-class neighbourhood and a hub of activism, the rainbow community and New Zealand reggae before gentrification from the 1970s transformed it. Today Ponsonby Road is one of the city's best-known strips of restaurants, bars, boutiques and galleries, fronting some of Auckland's most sought-after housing.
