Darfield is the main town between Christchurch and the West Coast, on the Canterbury Plains about 35 kilometres west of the city in the Selwyn District. Locals call it the township under the nor'west arch, after the band of cloud that often hangs over the Alps to the west, and it has grown from a small railway junction into a busy commuter and dairying town. It gave its name to the magnitude 7.1 Darfield earthquake of September 2010 and is now home to one of New Zealand's largest milk-powder plants.
