Sanson is a rural service town on the Manawatū plain 24 kilometres north-west of Palmerston North, busy out of all proportion to its size thanks to its spot at the junction of State Highways 1 and 3. It grew from the Crown's sale of the Sandon block in the late 1860s and took its slightly altered name from Henry Sanson of the Hutt Small Farm Association. For decades a tramway ran from here to the main trunk line at Hīmatangi, and today passing traffic keeps its cafés, antiques shops and roadside stops ticking over.
