Ngataki is a small farming community on the Aupōuri Peninsula in the Far North, set among the sand country between Houhora and the top of Ninety Mile Beach. The local Waiora Marae is a traditional meeting place for Ngāti Kurī, and families who moved south from Te Hapua in 1937 developed the surrounding land for dairying. Like much of the peninsula, this was kauri gum country, dug over heavily in the decades when gum was the enterprise of the north.
