Waverley is the southernmost town of the South Taranaki District, on State Highway 3 between Hāwera and Whanganui. Established as the military settlement of Wairoa during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, it was renamed Waverley when the railway arrived in 1881, and many of its streets still carry the names of the Taranaki Military Settlers. Sitting right on the old Wellington and Taranaki provincial boundary, it is farming and thoroughbred country, and even keeps Wellington Anniversary Day while neighbours up the road mark Taranaki's.
