Te Puru is a small beach settlement on the Thames Coast of the Coromandel, strung along the Firth of Thames about 12 kilometres north of Thames. Behind it the Te Puru Stream and its many tributaries drain a steep, native-forested catchment of the Coromandel Range that funnels down to the coast. That same geography has brought trouble in the past, with severe flooding in 2002, but the settlement remains a relaxed base of baches, holiday parks and safe swimming beaches.
