Middlemarch is the main town of the Strath Taieri, a tussocky basin of the Taieri River between the Rock and Pillar Range and the Taieri Ridge in inland Otago. It is best known as the eastern start and finish of the Otago Central Rail Trail, New Zealand's first Great Ride, which follows 150 kilometres of old railway line through to Clyde. The town is also famous for its Singles Ball, begun in 2001 to bring partners to single Maniototo farmers and now part of local legend.
