Wedderburn is a windswept Maniototo hamlet about 15 kilometres north-west of Ranfurly, once a centre for gold and coal and a terminus on the Otago Central Railway from 1921. Its weathered goods shed became one of New Zealand's most recognised buildings after Grahame Sydney's 1975 painting July on the Maniototo set it alone in the bare tussock land. The railway is long closed, but the line is now the Otago Central Rail Trail, and the restored station and shed make Wedderburn a favourite meeting point for cyclists crossing the high plain.
